Thomastown, Kilkenny

Thomastown, in beautiful surroundings in the Nore valley, is named after Thomas FitzAnthony Walsh, Anglo-Norman Seneschal (Governor) of Leinster. He is credited with building a wall, complete with 14 towers around the town and in it a religious house and a castle in the 13th century. The castle was destroyed by Cromwell in 1650. There are some interesting monuments among the ruins of a large, 13th century church together with a very ancient high cross, which is near complete

Jerpoint Abbey is most interesting and is the best-preserved Cistercian ruins in the country, with finely sculpted lords and ladies forming part of the restored cloisters. It offers a visitor centre, guide service and facilities.

What to see and do in Tomastown

The main street of the town is brightly coloured and pretty, with shops and pubs hung with flower baskets. At the top of the town is the Water Garden, a walk between herbaceous borders, water plants and tinkling fountains.

Jerpoint Abbey, a national monument is an abbey of great charm and displays much of the mediaeval craftsmen's skills in its construction and embellishments.

On the outskirts of Thomastown lies the impressive ruins of Grennan Castle, also built by Thomas FitzAnthony Walsh. A lay-by with seating presents lovely views over the river to the castle and hurling fields on the opposite bank of the Nore.

Kilfane Church (north of Thomastown off the N9) is mostly noted for the fine, 14th century effigy of Thomas de Cantwell, which is known as Cantwell Fada or Long Cantwell because of its greater than life size.

Gemstones lovers will enjoy browsing in All That Glisters Rock & Fossil Shop at Ladywell Corner - All that Glisters was founded by Sue Bowden in 1988. She designs and makes a variety of products using natural gemstones, crystal and fossils.

Experienced fishing local guides are available throughout the season by contacting Mr Noel Molloy at Noreside Outdoors.
