The longest greenway for walkers and cyclists has now opened at a development cost of €15m. The route extends approximately 46km from Waterford City to Dungarvan using the abandoned Great Southern and Western Railway line.
The Waterford Greenway features in the EuroVelo, a network of long distance cycling routes across Europe and also forms part the Ireland’s Ancient East group of visitor attractions for the region.
The greenway traverses eleven bridges, three viaducts and a 400-metre tunnel and includes Waterford City and the towns of Mount Congreve, Kilmeaden, Kilmacthomas, Shanacool, Scartore and Dungarvan.
