Rathgormack, Waterford

The parish of Rathgormack is situated in the Barony of Upperthird which forms one of the sub-divisions of the Dioceses of Waterford and Lismore. Rathgormack is the ideal location for exploring the many attractions of North Waterford including Crotty's Lake, Coumshingaun Lake, the Mahon Falls, the Nire Valley in the Comeragh Mountains. Walkers, cyclists and scenic drives enthusiasts, even those with a moderate appetite for the outdoors, will discover that both the Comeragh Mountains and the Nire Valley provide a cornucopia of natural beauty and a warm, welcoming people. The charm of the place lies in its unspoiled and uncrowded environment, where visitors can enjoy a lovely wilderness, yet be only minutes away from the larger towns and the coast.

What to see and do in Rathgormack

Approximately 6km to the east of Rathgormack village is Mothel Abbey. Enquire locally for directions. Originally a 6th century monastery, the site was refounded by the Power family as an abbey for the Augustinians in the 13th century.

Well worth a visit is the tumbling Mahon River, in the Comeragh Mountains which lie at the end of a sensitively developed foothpath. Don't forget to bring a picnic.

Walking/Hiking: For walking enthusiasts, Rathgormack Hiking Centre, in the centre of the village is a purpose built dormitory style hostel centre where you can avail of walking maps and all sorts of useful local walking information.

Scenic Drive: If touring by car, follow the signposted Comeragh Mountains Drive. You will discover some sentional views, and the many high viewing points which provide excellent panoramas over the green countryside below.
